Hi guys, i'm sort of back online...

I'm recovering from a major desaster!

I've had all 4 hard drives in my PC fail their SMART status's...
2XIDE, 2XSATA... all drives of diferent ages, capacities, makes, models and manufacturers...
All drives failed with surface/ECC related errors...

The likelyhood of this happening is about a billion to 1... as such i got a couple of lottery tickets for the weekend...

I can definatly say I've lost data that wasn't backed up...
My datasheet directory was totally trashed as was my free energy video's directory...

yesterday i orderd a temporary replacement hard drive, both operating systems (XP PRO and LINUX) are pritty trashed... Linux refuses to boot in anything other than maintanance mode (effectively, safe mode). XP i've managed to get it to boot by replacing damaged windows files, but it's damaged beyond anything other than saving my settings and the odd download and unzip...

It's going to take a week to sort out XP with all my apps ontop of that i have a course asignment due in on wednesday, JOY!

So, if i'm not online much, apologies...

CW

Wow! Having years of computer experience (mostly linux) I would say you hit the hardware failure lottery. If I where you I would stay home. Lock your doors and stay away from lightning storms! Where they setup in a RAID of any kinda?

I am very sorry to hear about this for you, I too had to buy a new laptop this week from a hard drive crash with out warning????? I back up everything on my back up and important things I still save to CD. I also have went the extra step to Use yahoo to back up it all with a web sight that is not open to public view but is only managed by me.

Again it will get better, till then be strong and back it all up in several places

Micah, your a linux tech? cool it been a while since i found a fellow linux tech. What distro you use? you ever tried compiling linux from scratch?

I'm just about to say goodbye to this screwed up XP install and commence a new one on a brand new hard drive...

The drives wern't in raid, they were just atatch an go...
I have had a RAID5 array consisting of 14 SCSI3 drives fail, two drives at the same time... never had four completely seperate drives fail at the same time b4...

Oh well, bye bye xp...

Not to but in but I am using the new Windows 7 Pro and it is a dream to use it is great and solid I run everything from my AutoCad with full life rendering to file direct editors to Sound editing software with out missing a beat, it is clearly the best operating software that Microsoft has produced to date.

Love it

windows vista and windows 7 seriously suck!
let me spell this out for people...
Windows 3.11 ~ 20-30MB
Windows 95 ~ 100MB
Windows 98 ~ 200-300MB
Windows ME ~ 500MB
Windows XP ~ 700-900MB
Windows vista ~ 1500-3500MB
Windows 7 (they ran out of names!) ~ 2000-5000MB

The values given are install size... the bigger the install, the faster the PC required to run it at the same speed and responce time... my PC boots ME in 5 SECONDS, but takes XP pro 25 seconds...

Also, i severely disliked MS after that braught out vista... The whole vista type interface is a 'copy' of linux's KDE graphical interface... Even vistas network revision is allmost identical to KDE/LISA method...
At that point, i removed vista beta 1 from my PC and havn't beta tested a microsoft product since...

All microsoft operating systems are as secure as a collinder holds water... every time you see notification of a windows update just have a look at exactly how many 'updates' are in the list, each one is a bug, or security hole...
I lost count after the 4 figure mark with XP (the service packs contain several hunderd each)...

:edit
Also, microsoft are so fed-up of people hacking into and vandalising their website, that they pay a company to protect it... this company used linux based firewalls, proxys and website acceleration servers!

:edit2
MAC OS 10 is actually linux... or more precisely, Free BSD linux...

Hey comwarrior. At the moment Im using Gentoo. Its basicly linux from scratch only less headache. I have been using gentoo for years. I also have a box thats going to be going out to my workshop that is running debian lenny. I have used almost every distro out there. Heck I even build my own. I always come back to either gentoo or debian. Gentoo has the customization that I like, but debian is easier and faster to get setup and is good for older systems.

If I had to go back to Windows. I would use Windows 2000. Xp is ok - to a point, but Windows 2000 has always been pretty rock stable for my meager uses. I also use 2000 in a vmware setup and it works really well.
