Hey i was wondering, whats the main difference between air coil and having a iron filing/nail core. I saw that if you use a iron core then their is a certain limit to how close you can get to the core, otherwise the core will just attract the magnet rotor instead of repel it as it should. Are their disadvantages to using an air coil?

I have found that the following is testing true for my motor.

Air coils are best for developing power because of the dynamics of the field that is produced, IE a slave coil. The main reason for the core is to focus the energy to propel the magnets away from the source coil. However you are correct that there is an attraction between the core and the magnets this is what I refer to as a memory in the coil.

I have developed a core that transfers 100% of the pulse to the reacting magnet with out retaining a memory. so I can gap the coil to give the best rotation with out a memory in the coil.

Please see my post "Differences in cores" for more information.
