I know that everyone is winding copper, but I wondered how much less efficient it would be to prototype using an alternative wire...
I found that I can buy 1/4 mile of electric fencing wire (17ga, galvanized steel, I believe) for $13USD.
I didn't know how much less magnetically effective it would be, but it sure would help the checkbook out initially. I do know that it will definitely carry the charge over the distance!
Any thoughts???

ditto! it's bare, to shock the critters... Scrap out an old monitor it has like 500' of coil wire in there!

Yes the reuse of wire out of transformers or around a TV or motors are the way to go steel or other wire is not the same make up for the mag wire.
Please see my videos for reclaiming parts I show how on a TV.

Duh... I wasn't thinking of enameled copper even though I had 3 small spools here from Radio Shack.
I was questioning in my head why it wouldn't just short out across the windings seeking the least resistive path... Glad I only bought the $3 roll of galvanized today! Also glad I didn't attempt any large voltage or current across the little coil I wound... it didn't wind very well anyways.
I will invest in the real thing, otherwise it will be really hard to make a proof-of-concept model if the coils won't fire!
Thanks for giving me the knock upside the head... |

Other wire types can work, but need insulated. Iron has been used in coils, also aluminum. (Many more I'm sure!) These elements have different resistances (all but SILVER are higher) and also a different "relaxation time" in that they lose their induced magnetic fields at a different rate, which is induced by electron flow.

Justa: hit it on the head there is not a per-say perfect core made from one material but using composites from several materials is a great way to go. It gives the best of all worlds.
