Following on from daftmans video's on salvaging i decided to post my latest haul...
My salvage was 4 very old style car sterios with tape and radio...
so, first off, two multi channel 10K pots...

Two pots i havn't yet identified, but multi channel...

Two single channel pots but they don't have stops, so they keep turning around and around...

and 4 boardes packed with mini transisters, diodes, resisters, capacitors and old style trimmer pots...

I've also got, 4 old style variable capacitors and 4 identical 12V DC high torque motors about 50-60mm diameter 30mm long... Their is some audio amplifier chips, but i'm not sure i can unsolder them without killing them...
NICE!

I know what ya mean I salvage all the time I see a tv or monitor or anything that has a cord I'm taking bits off of it. I have a bunch too but I am very orderly about it a place for it all and drawers labeled like a supply shop.
Love to take it all apart. the easiest way I have found is with a heat gun on low a distance away from the boards then the solder heats up and the parts just fall off. ( I have a temp probe so it never gets to hot) I set it and then come back later to sort it all out.

PS: Nice thread ComW, we need a sticky on most desirable salvage and where to find them... I have a couple old microwaves I'm going to scrap out soon, what should I look for in these? So far I want to get the magnetron and any coils, and the turntable motors. Anything else I should get?
TIA, Rob

Well there are a bit more things in your microwave to look for like the circuit board most have a rotation censer for the motor that can be retrofitted for the use of making a coil winding machine. Look at the housing there is deadening material that helps shield the waves from the magnetron this is good for mag shielding for different parts of your motor to adjust your fields for the best rotation and such.
Also there is the transformers and such that can be used as is or can be unwrapped for the mag wire on them for more coils later.
Basically I keep it all but the shell and the plastic junk and recycle all the left over bits that I can.
Some other good reference areas to get old electronic equipment is from the local help centers like the salvation army and the thrift stores. Many of these places just throw this broken or non working items in the trash. like DVD players computers TV's etc. I have formed a connection with 3 of these places with the management so when they have broken or non working devices they call me to come pick them up. and since I just want the parts I donate the recycle money back to where I picked up the broken devices, that assures my always getting first dibs at all the good stuff. (not to say a tax credit at the end of the year too)
Hope this is a help to get the ball rolling for scrapping

The local High School just tossed out 7 hard drives. (Power surge in a testing bay I am told) So no electronics however, I have 7 drives for the bearings and 14 really strong neo mags. (7 south, 7 north facing, mounted on plates.) Oddly shaped though. Like the outside 1/3 of a pie slice.

Well I just came back from the salvation army on my way home from the office and I picked up 2 42 inch tube TV's and have stripped them down and sure enough I have enough mag wire to make 3 more coils for yet more play.
